Ambulance bosses delay closure decision

A finaldecision on whether or not Belper Ambulance Station is to be downgraded has been deferred until the end of March.

East Midlands Ambulance Service chief executive, Phil Milligan unveiled proposals last July to close 29 stations across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire and replace them with four “hub” centres.

Under proposals Belper would become a deployment point, meaning crews would have to collect and drop off their vehicle at Chesterfield or Derby at the beginning and end of each shift.

However, as reported in the News, the ambulance station could effectively survive the county closures as it already operates out of a small building – although that depends on an analysis of 999 calls in the area.

Now, following formal consultations with staff and the public, EMAS has delayed its decision until March 25 while it considers alternative options.

EMAS communications manager Phil Morris said: “It’s encouraging that so many people across the region feel so passionately. As a direct result of the feedback from the consultations, we are now looking at alternative options.

“We will be carrying out further analysis.”
