Asbestos-hit fundraiser set to return

A popular hospital fundraiser which was put on hold following an asbestos scare is set to return this Summer.

The Friends of Babington Hospital’s annual garden party had raised more than £250,000 since it was first launched in 1957.

However, equipment belonging to event organisers was quarantined in early 2011 when a routine inspection discovered minute traces of asbestos in the whitewash which covered the walls of a cellar at the hospital. The event had to be cancelled and has not been held since.

Now, the Friends have now been promised funding to enable some equipment to be replaced. This will mean that the garden party can be held again in 2014, albeit, because of lack of time, on a smaller scale than in previous years.

Ray Asher, who is in charge of fund-raising at the Friends said: “It is wonderful that we are able to hold our garden party again after three blank years. Many people have said how much they have missed it. We are hoping that in 2015 we will be able bring it back to its previous size.”

Alan Cox, the Friends’ Treasurer said: “We have missed this income and I am pleased the garden party is being resurrected.”

The party will be held in the grounds of Babington Hospital on Saturday, June 7 from 1.30pm to 4pm. There will be many of the usual stalls. Entertainment will be provided by The Babington Choir. Businesses are being sought to sponsor raffle prizes - phone Ray Asher on 01773 823347.
