Bailiffs to strike against Amber Valley tax dodgers
Bailiffs have been given the legal right to seize goods from 464 people who owe council tax to Amber Valley Borough Council.
Magistrates were told the debt totalled 217,234 and began to build up in this financial year. As well as issuing liability orders, the court ordered each person to pay 48 to cover the cost of their summonses.
Martin Hendy, the council's revenue services manager, told the court at Ilkeston they had been summoned to attend court by letters sent out in October.
The JPs issued liability orders against 29 firms owing 72,397 in business rates. They must also find an extra 48 to cover the cost of summonses to attend Monday's hearing.
This year, the council has to collect 52 million in council tax from 54,000 people.
On top of that, it is responsible for drawing in 26 million from 3,600 companies across the borough.
The council has one of the highest collection rates in the country, which eases the tax burden for people who pay on time.
