Becky puts focus on bonfire safety

WHILE other teenagers have been making party plans for Hallowe'en and Bonfire Night one 14-year-old has been spending time designing safety DVDs.

Becky Slack, of Tumbling Hill, Heage, designed the two films to be aired in schools in Amber Valley in a bid to teach students about the issues surrounding the occasions.

She was asked to make the DVDs by the Amber Valley Community Safety Partnership.

Becky, who is in Year Nine at John Flamsteed Community School in Denby, said: "I've never done anything like this before, but I'll hopefully get involved with more things like it now.

"I think it's an important message. People need to be safer on Bonfire Night and be careful with fireworks because it can lower the risk of injuries and things like that."

Issues including the correct use of fireworks, setting up a fire, and the problems around trick-or-treating are covered in the DVDs.

In the bonfire night film, Firestarter, by The Prodigy, is played over shocking images, and messages encouraging young people to be safe.

The two-minute DVDs have been sent to all secondary schools in Amber Valley to be shown to students in Years Seven, Eight and Nine.

They were funded by the safety partnership as part of its work for Operation Relentless – a six-week police operation aimed at encouraging community confidence.

Community safety officer Sally Price said: "Schools think the DVDs are absolutely brilliant, the young people have reacted really well to them. They get the messages that we wanted to communicate to young people across very effectively.

"It makes sense to get a teenager to help communicate with teenagers and it does seem to have worked. Becky is really pleased with the reaction too."
