Comic Relief saw wild and wacky events going off throughout Belper as this year’s national appeal raised a record £75million.

Boiler company Vaillant staged a number of events at its Nottingham Road factory - raising around £1,500. Among the activities taking place were ‘throw a cream pie at a manager’, ‘have a manager wash your car’, a cake and coffee morning, auctions and body-part waxing.

Becky Melbourne, who helped to organise the fundraising, said: “There were about 20 local firms who donated to the raffle and auctions and we’d just like to say a big thank you to them for their contributions.

“It was our most successful fundraising year ever.”

Meanwhile at Kilburn Junior School they were still counting up donations after pupils took part in a sponsored scootathon.

Each class took turns to do five laps - or roughly a mile - on their scooters around the school playground and got friends and relatives to sponsor them.

This year’s TV appeal raised £75,107,851 - the highest total reached on the night in Red Nose Day’s 25-year history.

BT handled 458,000 calls to the donation line during the live TV show, peaking at 200 calls per second.
