Belper soldier lands top honour
A BELPER soldier is one step closer to his dreams of working in the Royal Engineers after completing his basic training.
Sapper Thomas Reade, 19, spent 14 weeks learning about weapons handling, fitness, teamworking and other skills while he was stationed at Pirbright Barracks in Woking, Surrey.
The teenager impressed his fellow new recruits so much during his time there that when he passed out recently he was given the Soldier's Medal on the recommendation of his colleagues.
The medal is given to mark bravery, courage and respect for others, among other things.
Thomas, a former Belper School student, has followed his brother Adam into the Army.
He will now go on to take part in trade training to become a communications technician.
Thomas' mum Gill said: "I'm very proud of him, but I will be anxious when he is deployed. I think young men and women that join the Army these days deserve all our credit because they know they will be going to war."
"He has always wanted to join the army."
