Belper residents say no to Tesco

HUNDREDS of Belper residents have voted in our Tesco – Yes or No – poll this week and so far it seems you definitely want to keep the supermarket giant out of town.

Almost three quarters of those who have voiced their opinion have said they were against the development, which includes a huge superstore, a bypass, shops, and new community and sports facilities.

But if you have not cast your vote yet then there is still time to have your say on the controversial plans. We have printed the voting slip again on page seven and we will continue to collect the results for as long as they keep coming in.

We do not intend to send them to Amber Valley Borough Council until a planning application has actually been submitted but we will let you know the results as we go along.

Many of the people against the superstore have said they think it would wreck the unique charm and character of Belper's World Heritage Site.

Other comments have included fears the development is too big and dominating for the town, it would kill the current town centre, and it would cause unbearable traffic problems.

A spokesman for the Derwent Valley Mills Partnership, which looks after the heritage site, said: "The development would result in very considerable damage to the Belper Conservation area."

He added: "Most particularly, the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site."

Supporters of the Tesco proposals have said the 80,000 sq ft store would bring healthy competition for Belper's existing supermarkets and offer better choice for shoppers.

One voter said: "It will bring modernisation and more choice and convenience."

Belper's Civic Forum has been trying to encourage people to take part in the discussion, which is widely considered to be one of the biggest issues facing Belper in decades.

To have your say turn to pages 6 and 7 of this week's Belper News.

We only want people to vote once in the poll but are happy to accept photocopies of the voting form if several members of your family want to have a say.

Get them in to us as soon as possible so we are prepared for the day the planning application is submitted.
