Break-in at Belper shop

Burglars smashed the window of a Bridge Street shop and stole a laptop.

Newdec Adaptations, on Bridge Street, was broken into overnight on Wednesday, July 1, directly underneath a police CCTV camera.

The burglars smashed a hole in a glass door-panel using a crow-bar to break the lock.

Staff were left standing outside the store for hours when they arrived at work the next morning, as they were unable to get in through the damaged door.

A member of staff, who did not wish to be named, said: "I don't know why someone would try to break in. We always leave the laptop on a chair, but you can't see it unless you know it's there. They obvioulsy wanted to get in for some reason.

"We're obviously very concerned. I would have thought the cameras inside the store would have been a deterrent, plus the fact that it's on the main road and there is a street camera nearby."

The shop, which sells bathrooms, has been open since the middle of January. It is the first time it has been targetted in this way.

Sam Coupe, who works at Ultra Violet, next door to NewDec, discovered the break-in when she arrived at work on Thursday morning. She said: "I think it was just an opportune thing, it's there and it's just out of sight of the CCTV.

"Security isn't something I was worried about but when something happens next door it does make you think.

"I think everyone is concerned about it whether it's your business or your home, but I think we have adequate measures here to deter anybody who might want to break in."

A police spokesman said nothing had been picked up on the camera.
