Busy programme of Larks concerts

The programme of events for the forthcoming Larks in the Parks concerts has been finalised.

The summer music events faced a catalogue of problems after delays in refurbishment work at Belper River Gardens, where the concerts are normally held, forced them to be moved to the Memorial Gardens, on King Street.

Several of the acts have been changed as a result of the move.

The entertainment will kick off in the Memorial Gardens on Sunday, June 14, with dance troupe Folk Friendzy and keyboardist/vocalist Brian Scott.

On Sunday, June 21, folk group Hoipolloi and classical singer Sarah MacGeagh will perform.

On Sunday, June 28, country and western singer John Gill and the Alfreton Male Voice Choir will be on show, and on Sunday, July 5, Brassington, Middleton and Wirksworth Brass Band will take to the stage.

Organisers hope, by that point, that the work in the River Gardens, which has been delayed because Amber Valley Borough Council, which owns the gardens, had to ship in steel for the edgings from abroad, will be completed.

A promenade concert featuring acts such as Heage Brass Band, Carlo the Clown, Belper Players, and Dalediva, will start off the programme at the newly revamped venue on Sunday, July 12.

Heage Brass Band will perform on Sunday, July 19, Cross O'th Hands folk group will join Hoipolloi on Sunday, July 26, and Belper Town Wind Band will entertain on Sunday, August 2.

The rest of August will see Folk Friendzy, Mark Lilley and Darley Dale Brass perform, before the grand opening of the new children's play area on Sunday, August 23, when there will be a children's picnic and entertainment.

Belper Town Wind Band will wrap up the summer programme on Sunday, August 30.

Around 100,000 has been spent on the River Gardens in recent months, in a bid to bring it up to scratch and create a new heritage-themed play area.
