Belper MP Pauline Latham has been lobbying for the UKs first HS2 College to be located close to the town.
The politician welcomed news that Derby has been shortlisted as a possible site for the groundbreaking development by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
The other cities in the running include Doncaster, Birmingham and Manchester.
The college will open in 2017, and will equip around 2,000 young engineers with the skills they need to work on the HS2 project.
Mrs Latham, MP for Mid Derbyshire said: “Given the city’s rich railway history and the fact that many of the country’s top engineering firms are based here, it seems the natural choice for the location of the college.”
“I will of course keep a close eye on this matter and will make further representations to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills to ask that they look favourably on Derby in the selection.”
