Kind–hearted folk will parade a giant banana through the streets of the Dales on their mission to get third world farmers a square deal.

The Derbyshire Dales Fairtrade groups will hold a run on Saturday February 22 in advance of this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight, from February 24 to March 9.

Runners will carry a giant inflatable banana with the Fairtrade logo on it to promote the cause.

Grayden Daniels, of the Matlock Fairtrade group, said: “ Fairtrade is important because it makes a great difference to the lives of farmers and workers in the developing world.

“We want to drink tea and coffee and eat bananas and it’s simple so these people are growing theses products so I think we have a duty to pay a fair price for these items.”

Groups of runners will start off in Ashbourne at 9.30am, finishing in Wirksworth.

A group will then run from Wirksworth at 12.30pm.

Runners starting in Bakewell and Matlock will set off at noon.

Other events will be held throughout the Dales over the coming weeks to encourage people to use Fairtrade merchandise.
