Festive season starts in style in Belper

HUNDREDS of people flocked into Belper town centre on Friday night to see the Christmas lights being switched on and the countdown to Christmas officially begin.

Derby County Football Club manager Nigel Clough flicked the switch for the lights and kicked off an evening of festive fun in the town centre.

Stalls and entertainment filled King Street and Belper Town Wind Band played Christmas songs to get everybody in the festive spirit.

Several of the town centre shops were also open late into the evening.

Amber Valley Mayor, Cllr Norman Bull, said: "I would like to thank the many people that turned out and the shops that opened and Belper Wind Band.

"Thanks to Nigel Clough for coming — he thought it was a tremendous event and John Nelson (leader of Belper Town council) was over the moon about it."

The annual nativity staged by Churches Together took place in the memorial gardens as usual, but with a slight twist.

Instead of wise men and shepherds, young people from youth

organisations including the Drop Inn dressed as hoodies and took on the roles themselves.

Ken Reynard, from Churches Together, said it had been done to try and engage the young people with the Christmas story.
