Fifty people in Mid Derbyshire have been helped off benefits and are now running their own business as part of a Government scheme.

The entrepreneurs were all helped by the New Enterprise Allowance introduced by the Coalition Government in April 2011.

The allowance – which supports people on out of work benefits to start their own business – has helped more than 46,000 people across the country to set up successful businesses.

The support available to people starts with help from a business mentor to develop their business idea.

Then, once they have got the business up and running, and have moved off benefits, they are eligible for 26 weeks of financial support as they get their business going.

Mrs Latham, MP for Mid Derbyshire said: “It’s great to hear that 50 people in my constituency have had the support they needed to get off benefits and start their own businesses.

“It goes without saying that small businesses are a hugely important part of our community and vital to local jobs.

“I am proud to be part of a party that is so committed to supporting small businesses as part of its long-term economic plan.

“ There is of course much more to do, but these figures show that our support is helping people to get off benefits and running their own business, giving them the promise of a better and brighter future.”

The new enterprise allowance figures come just one week after figures from the Office of National Statistics showed that the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in Mid Derbyshire has fallen by 43 in the last month.

The total number of claimants in Mid Derbyshire now stands at 527, which represents just 1.2 per cent of the total population of working age.

The amount of people claiming the benefit in the constituency has fallen by 390 over the last year, and it is currently in the top 50 constituencies in the country in terms of the number of people employed.

In Belper the number of unemployed people stands at just 135.

Mrs Latham, MP for Mid-Derbyshire said: “It is great to see that the Chancellor’s long-term economic plan is working, and that it continues to encourage people back into the workplace.

“The Treasury’s business- friendly policies have also been contributing, providing more jobs for hardworking people.”
