Firefighters stage Christmas strikes

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service has announced that its Fire Brigades Union members will be taking further strike action over the Christmas and New Year period.

Union members were on strike on Christmas Eve from 7pm until midnight, and then on New Year’s Eve from 6.30pm unil 12.30am and on January 3 from 6.30am to 8.30am.

During times of industrial action, firefighters will continue to provide a 999 emergency response service at a reduced level.

And the service is once again calling upon Derbyshire communities to take extra care during this and any subsequent periods of industrial action.

Communities are asked to provide the first wall of defence, protecting their loved ones from the risks of fire and take responsibility for their own safety.

Area manager Gavin Tomlinson said: “We will still provide a 999 service but once again we are asking members of the public to take extra steps to reduce the risk of a fire breaking out in their home and take extra care on the roads.”Area Manager Gavin Tomlinson said: “Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are traditionally a time when more people are out and about enjoying themselves whether it is in restaurants, cinemas, nightclubs or other entertainment venues. I would urge all business owners and managers to ensure the safety of their staff and customers is of paramount importance during the industrial action.”
