Hook, line and sinker: Ambergate pupils offer their backing to the Derbyshire Wildlife Trusts Petition Fish campaign

TALES from the deep were told to youngsters at a village school recently as part of their project on marine life.

The children from Ambergate were visited by Tim Brooks of Derbyshire Wildlife Trust for a talk about our seas and the importance of the ocean’s wildlife. The children were also keen to sign a sparkly paper fish scale each and attach them to John Dory fish, a cardboard sea creature which is part of the trust’s Petition Fish campaign to put pressure on the UK, Scottish and Welsh Governments to create Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) – sanctuaries for sea life.

A spokesperson for the trust said: “The children also did a quiz to guess how long it takes items of rubbish to rot away in the sea. They were amazed and shocked that it takes 500 years for plastic bags to decompose and the lethal hazard they are for turtles, which they mistake for jelly fish.”
