Derbyshire Police has been commended in a top national report for its work on equal rights.

The force was singled out by the Equality and Human Rights Commission, a public body which enforces equality and non-discrimination laws.

The EHRC said it was a good example of an organisation which promotes equality issues among staff and within communities.

Among the work which is ongoing in Belper is fostering good relations through community involvement – including police surgeries at the Derbyshire Building Society and elsewhere in the town.

Police and Crime Commissioner Alan Charles said: “ “Our force is one of only two in the country to be featured as a case study within the review, and is clearly seen to be at the forefront of good practice.

“Derbyshire Constabulary deserves to be congratulated for its commitment in carrying out this duty and for its eagerness to use it as an opportunity to improve its understanding of our communities.”

Derbyshire’s Deputy Chief Constable Alan Goodwin added: “We’re pleased that the EHRC and Commissioner Alan Charles have recognised our commitment to promoting equality issues both within our organisation and externally with the communities we serve.

“It’s important that the communities of Derbyshire have faith in our ability to treat them as individuals and deal with them in a fair way at all times.”

The next Belper Safer Neighbourhoods police surgery is being held at the building society on King Street on January 16 from 11am to 12pm.
