A Denby mum-of-three who only started running last year battled flood water and icy conditions to complete a half- marathon race.

Gail Pickering, 47, of Derby Road, completed the arduous Wilmot Wander, in Derby, in seven hours and 18 minutes, winning the praise of her coach along the way.

Gail said: “It was hard but it was a challenge that I wanted to do. The water was up to my thighs but I still got through it. I just wanted to finish! The conditions were the worst they had ever been.”

Jog Derbyshire team leader Steven Saunders started training Gail ten months ago.

He said: “The current nearly swept you off your feet because of the snow melting. It’s a big achievement.”
