Guides get cash boost

Belper Guides receive a cash boost from Belper Derbyshire county councillor Peter Makin.

Belper Guides receive a cash boost from Belper Derbyshire county councillor Peter Makin.

GIRL Guides in Belper had been given a boost to their fund for camping equipment, thanks to a Belper councillor.

They have received £500 from the members’ fund run by Derbyshire County Council, which provides one-off grants for projects and initiatives that will benefit local communities.

The money was presented to the 2nd Belper St Peter’s Guides by Belper county councillor Peter Makin.

Guide leader Donna Roberts said: “In summer we will be taking Guides from three units in Belper along to Brumjam, an international Guide and Scout jamboree in Birmingham.

“The grant will be used to buy new catering equipment for this camp, which will also be used at future events.”

The 2nd group meets at Belper Congregational Church and has 31 girls attending.

Donna added: “We are very grateful to Cllr Makin, who came along to meet the Guides and chat to them, and to the scheme for the grant, which will make a big difference to the catering side of camp for the Guides.”

Cllr Makin said his main passion when it came to charity was helping children’s ones, including when he was mayor of Amber Valley raising money for the Derbyshire Children’s Home in Skegness.

He said: “Children are our most precious heritage – they’re our future. The money will be put to good use.”

The members’ fund sees councillors given a yearly amount of £3,000, which they can use to help good causes in their areas.
