Helicopter crash: pilot had worked for air ambulance

The pilot who was killed during a helicopter crash in London used to save lives for the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.

Pete Barnes, aged 50, died when the Agusta Westland 109 he was piloting crashed into a crane at St George Wharf.

Born in Nottingham, in 1962, he studied business and marketing at the University of Derby.

He then went on to fly for the air ambulance, which covers Belper, for more than a decade.

Andy Williamson, chief executive of DLRAA, said: “We are deeply saddened to hear the news that Pete Barnes was killed in the helicopter accident in London.Pete had worked with us for many years and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his family and with all the families affected by this tragedy.”
