Laureate to reward young wordsmiths

Budding young poets who were inspired to enter a poetry competition by imagining what it was like to be a child in the 19th Century will be presented with their prizes by Derbyshire Poet Laureate Matt Black this week.

Staff at Derbyshire County Council’s Belper Library organised the event to encourage children to think what it would have been like to live in the town in the 1800s.

They used displays of local poems and photographs from the council’s Picture the Past website to inspire young writers.

Winners and runners up will be presented with a book of their choice on Thursday.
