a WELCOMING village store on the outskirts of Belper has been nominated for a prestigious award.

The Milford Village Store, which is on Foundry Lane, Milford, has been put forward for a Countryside Alliance gong.

The convenience store, which is owned and run by husband and wife team of Ken and Jean Greensmith, was nominated by one of its customers in the Village Store category.

Ken said: “It is nice to be appreciated.

“We have got a lot of support from local people, and we do appreciate the support we get.” The shop sells everything from alcohol and food, to washing-up liquid.

“We try to sell what people want,” said Ken. “We set up the shop from nothing after taking over the old Co-op.”

The awards scheme aims to celebrate unsung heroes in rural communities.

People say who they want to nominate and what makes that choice so special. There are five categories in the awards.

A new general store opening up in a residential area with no immediate shopping facilities is popular? Who knew!
