Owners of a new Belper gallery aim to build on the success of the town’s first ever arts festival.

Suzanne Parnell is launching The Cherry Orchard on Market Place, with the vast majority of stock being produced by local creative talent.

The new venture aims to continue the momentum of the festival, which saw 11,000 visitors attend more than 125 events in Belper during May and is estimated to have brought in over £50,000 into the local economy.

Suzanne said: “We are having an opening weekend on July 13 and 14 to coincide with the Farmers’ Market and Belper Food Festival when there will be plenty of people about.

“The formal opening will take place on Saturday July 13 at lunch time by nationally known artist Peter Woolley, who regularly appears on TV, and has authored many watercolour books and instructional DVDs.

“Peter will be there all Saturday morning for people to come and meet and talk to, grabbing light refreshments and browsing the new gallery.

“Our aim with the gallery is very much to focus on local creative talent and the vast majority of work we are stocking initially will be from local people.

“ It is also anticipated that The Cherry Orchard will also become a focal point for next year’s Belper Arts Festival given its location where people can gain more information about the festival and book tickets.”
