New building will 'spoil church view'

BUILDING work at a house in Heage has angered nearby residents who claim it spoils the view of an old church.

People living near to St Luke's Church in the small village have criticised works which have begun on the corner of Eagle Street and Church Street.

They claim it spoils the view of the old Church of England church and ruins the layout of the village.

One resident said he believed it was a terrible move for Heage.

Philip Wilde, of Brook Street, added: "The church and clock are a focal point in the village and people have always been able to see them.

This house looks like a monastery on the top of the hill. Whoever on the council or planning board let them have it should hang their head in shame.

"Just think, tomorrow they could let them build at Heage Windmill so we would not be able to see this beautiful building."

Mr Wilde was speaking on behalf of many people living in the village, he said.

Plans for one home to be built on the land were approved last year. The newly-built house will be constructed using grey slate and render.

A previous application for two detached houses on the site was not determined.

The land was previously used as a garden.

Amber Valley Borough Council's planning board does not consider loss of view as a material planning consideration in determining planning applications, said a spokesman.

Cllr Juliette Blake, leader of Ripley Town Council and borough councillor for Heage and Ambergate, said the original applicant had pulled out of the scheme and the building was being erected by a new applicant.

She said: "There were no objections to the house when a planning application first went in to the planning board.

"Anyone who wasn't happy with the plans needed to express this when it was at the planning stage."

The builiding is already half finished.
