An eight-year-old girl from Bargate has completed a gruelling coast to coast bike ride - raising nearly £350 for a cancer charity in the process.

Niamh Williams, who attends Holbrook Primary School, took on the epic challenge in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care in memory of her grandmother.

And she completed the 135 mile ride in just four days.

Her father, Richard Williams, said: “The last day was 42 miles in pouring rain and a strong wind into Sunderland. By the end Niamh was very tired but kept going to the finish where she was finally rewarded with chips on the beach.

“All of this was achieved unsupported, we carried all our own gear stopping in a mixture of youth hostels and bunkhouses. A lot of children do attempt the same ride but the majority given the distance complete it in five days and not the four Niamh managed.”

Setting-off from Whitehaven, Niamh cycled to Keswick, through Penrith, Kirkoswald, over the Pennines to Rookhope and Sunderland.
