OAP shouted abuse in pub

A pensioner who hurled homophobic abuse in a Ripley pub has been ordered to pay compensation.
Staff at the Red Lion in Market Place suspected that Joseph Smith, 65, had written homophobic messages in the toilet, Sherall Pickford, prosecuting, told Chesterfield magistrates.
Staff were distressed by his behaviour, said Ms Pickford. She added that police asked him to go outside. In the smoking area he continued to rant and rave.
Smith, of Malson Way, Newbold, Chesterfield, admitted using threatening or insulting words or behaviour on January 7.
Deputy District Judge Andrew Davison ordered Smith to do 120 hours unpaid work and pay £100 compensation to Ms Palfreyman and Ms Marshall, plus £60 to a victims-of-crime fund, with £85 costs.
Smith, who denied leaving homophobic notes inside the pub toilets, said his behaviour was out of character.
He could not explain why he made offensive comments, adding: “I had something on my mind and that’s why it happened. I should know better, I’m 65.”
He said he had apologised to staff for his outburst.
