A van owner leapt onto the bonnet of his vehicle as thieves drove off in it in the early hours of the morning.

The 42–year–old owner of the Vauxhall Combo van had left his van briefly on Smith Crescent, Chesterfield, at 5am yesterday morning (Monday, April 21) with the keys in it when he heard the door closing.

Upon return, he saw two thieves inside. He stood in the way of the vehicle but the crooks started to drive off.

He jumped on the bonnet, causing the windscreen to smash, but unfortunately the van got away.

The owner was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Police are now appealing for any witnesses to call them on 101.
