A CARING woman who lives in Belper celebrated her 100th birthday on Sunday, January 29.

Margaret (Peggy) Wilson was born in Cheshire in 1912 and moved to Hodnet, Shropshire, after World War One. She went to the village school until aged 14 before moving to Bristol to become a nurse.

She moved to Makeney in 1935, where she worked at Makeney Hospital. Peggy spent her leisure time holidaying with friends and cycling around Derbyshire, but also travelling to Hodnet to look after her mother and disabled sister. She never married and worked at the hospital until she retired in 1972. She remained in the village, babysitting and meeting friends. Peggy then moved to Duffield. With the birth of her great nephew in 1990 her babysitting resumed and she loved taking him and his younger sister to Derby on the bus. Peggy remained active until well into her 90s when a fall resulted in a move to Ada Belfield care home in Belper.
