Controversial plans for up to 400 homes, along with business units and a care home, on the site of the former American Adventure theme park have now been submitted.

Neighbours living near the site, known as Shipley Lakeside, can now have their say on the plans during a public consultation which lasts until Friday, April 19.

Cllr Kevin Parkinson, who represents the area on Derbyshire County Council, is holding an event to discuss the plans at Shipley Parish Rooms on Monday March 25, with plans to hold further events in Mapperley village and at Ilkeston’s Shipley View area.

He said there will be a second and final four-week consultation in June before Amber Valley Borough Council gives the final yes or no to the plans at its September planning committee meeting.

The Wild West theme park closed in 2007 and since then the site has been largely  reclaimed by nature but is still open to the public and popular with dog walkers and bird watchers.

Plans to re-develop the land were first mooted by Derbyshire County Council in 2009.

Half of the site became Woodside Nature Reserve in 2011. Late last year developer Waystones, of Swanwick, revealed its masterplan to neighbours at a public exhibition, announcing it also hoped to include a pub, garden centre and retirement village there, which surrounds the large lake in the centre and accessed via Pit Lane in Shipley.
