Police welcome gun laws

DERBYSHIRE police have welcomed new laws which ban the importing, making and selling of realistic imitation firearms.

Up until now people have been able to buy these guns legally despite the fact that it is an offence to carry any firearm in public without lawful authority or reasonable excuse.

The new legislation overcomes this loophole which means realistic imitation guns will become less available in the future.

Insp Steve Fairbrother, crime reduction manager, said: “BB guns and replicas account for around one in six of the 233 firearm offences dealt with by Derbyshire police since April, so preventing the sale of lifelike guns is really good news."
