Pottery firm celebrates bi-centenary in style
Visitors flocked to Denby Pottery to help the firm celebrate its 200th birthday.
There was a party atmosphere at the Derby Road site on Saturday and Sunday, as the historic company marked the occasion.
A Victorian fun fair, special events and exhibitions helped to make the celebrations a big success.
There was also a special valuation day for Denby products, and shoppers were treated to 20 per cent off new Denby stock in the factory shop on the site.
Local bands entertained the crowds throughout the weekend in the main marquee.
Denby spokeswoman Linda Salt said: "It was really nice. We'd like to thank all the people in the community for coming to enjoy it with us.
"With the problems with the economy and how they have affected Denby, it was nice to have this big birthday party.
"We've had some really positive feedback.
"I overheard one couple saying they'd enjoyed it so much on Saturday that they came back on Sunday."
A plaque to commemorate the occasion was unveiled by William Tucker, the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire.
Amber Valley MP Judy Mallaber also popped along to support the event.
The company, which employs about 450 people in Denby, has not been immune to the recession and has faced some tough times recently.
It was left facing administration earlier in the year and bosses were forced to make 50 members of staff redundant.
But now, after a 30 million takeover, Denby Pottery is looking forward to a prosperous future.
Paul McGowan, chairman of the Denby Pottery Company, said: "Times have changed and tastes have moved on but the team at Denby Pottery continues to produce high quality, contemporary products.
It is rightly regarded as one of the gems of British manufacturing, upholding the traditions of a still proud company.
"We should all expect that Denby will celebrate a tri-centenery 100 years from now."
