Rolls Royce chief honoured

Belper man Michael Terrett has been awarded a CBE in the New Year’s Honours for his work with Rolls Royce.

The retiring chief operating officer, who lives in the village of Hazelwood, was given the honour for his 34 years’ with the company.

Born in Rhondda, Mid Glamorgan, he was educated at Newman School, Pontypridd and the University of Durham, where he graduated with a First in Engineering Science.

He went on to hold a number of senior positions relating to the development of new aero engine programmes at Rolls Royce.

One of his first roles was as a project director on the development of the company’s Trent engines – from design to entry into service, culminating in his appointment as a chief engineer.

Following that promotion he was a member of the Rolls-Royce team that won the 1996 MacRobert Award for Innovation in Engineering, and a year later was awarded the Royal Academy of Engineering silver medal for outstanding personal contribution to British engineering for his work on Trent engines.

He then became president and chief executive officer of International Aero Engines (IAE) based in East Hartford, Connecticut, United States before becoming the managing director of the Airlines division.

Immediately after that he was the president of Civil Aerospace.He has also gone on to become a member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and Fellow of Royal Aeronautical Society.

Now the father–of–three, who retired at the end of 2012, has been named as one of the Derbyshire luminaries to be honoured with titles by The Queen alongside Derby MP Margaret Beckett and Anthony Favell, councillor and chairman of the Peak District National Park Authority.
