Second homes tax is used to help hundreds

A tax on second homes will fund £239,000 worth of housing support for Amber Valley residents.

The extra funds came after people owning properties which are not classed as their main residence were told to pay 90 per cent of the total council tax for them.

The changes were introduced in Amber Valley after the popular tourist spot was identified as one of four areas in Derbyshire most affected by people owning holiday homes and rental properties.

The money raised in Amber Valley will be spent on will be spent on projects including providing housing support and advice to residents and funding aids and adaptations in people’s homes.

County Council Cabinet Member for Adult Care, Charles Jones ,said: “The extra money generated from council tax on second homes is being put to very good use.

“Really worthwhile projects are receiving funding which in turn is benefiting hundreds of local people, some of whom are very vulnerable and find the support they receive invaluable.”

In High Peak around £345,000 is being spent on homelessness and support for domestic abuse victims.
