A shoe shop chain which has a store in Belper is celebrating its 60th anniversary this week.

Wards Shoe Shops, which opened a branch on King Street in 1988, was originally founded in Worksop and now has its headquarters in Whatstandwell.

Still a family business, now run by Justin and Alison Mansfield who are the third generation and live in Crich the company also has four other shops which are located in Allestree, Matlock, Bakewell and Worksop and employs 25 people in and around the local area.

Mr Mansfield said: “The last few years have been very challenging for small local businesses so it’s great to kick of this season with the company’s 60th anniversary. We are very proud that we are still an independent, family run shop.”

From Tuesday, April 22 to Saturday, April 26 staff at the Belper store are celebrating the company’s anniversary.
Five pairs of shoes and a ladies handbag are being given away along with an anniversary prize draw to be drawn at 3pm on Saturday, April 26.

Plus there will be bubbly for the adults and balloons for the kids.
A party for staff and suppliers at Wards is being held at the Alison House Hotel, Cromford in May.

Wards was opened in Worksop in 1954 by Eric Ward. It was launched in Belper when the James Baker shoe shop in Belper was taken over in 1988.
