Sydney Spencer celebrates his 100th birthday with his family.

Sydney Spencer celebrates his 100th birthday with his family.

Former Belper foundry worker Sydney Spencer notched-up his century surrounded by family and friends.

The former Park Foundry employee got a job in the pattern shop, starting in 1927, after being stopped by a managing director in the street on his way home from school.

His luck continued when he got taken on to the Rolls-Royce Spitfire programme during the war without an interview.

He moved on to become chief Inspector and quality control manager of the foundry and retired at the age of 65.

He has two daughters, Jennifer and Barbara, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

His main hobbies were tending to his garden, particularly his vegetables, and a lifelong love of ballroom dancing which was re-ignited during his 60s.
