A total of 1,140 penalty notices have been handed out by Derbyshire County Council to parents who took their children out of school in term time to go on holiday.

The authority has also prosecuted 81 of those parents after they failed to pay a £60 fine in 2013/14. Since September 2013, headteachers have no longer had the discretion to approve absences of up to 10 days a year following a change in the law.
