A Belper deli has been presented with an award for serving the best breakfast in Derbyshire, for the third year running at a prestigious ceremony.

Fresh Basil, on Strutt Street, was handed the honour by celebrity chef Valentine Warner at the county council run Derbyshire Food & Drink Awards on Thursday, January 23.

Owners Charlotte Tansley and Wendy Moore picked-up the accolade from chef Valentine, star of the BBCs What to Eat Now series.

Charlotte said: “We really didn’t expect it three years on the trot - we were so shocked when they read out our name. It’s a wonderful hat-trick to have.

“We had a great celebration after we found out and because a lot of people had seen we had won the award on Twitter and Facebook the next day we had loads of people coming in and ordering breakfasts.

“I think the reason it has impressed is that it’s all made with local produce, very fresh to order and is not too expensive while still being up to a high standard.

“It works and everyone enjoys it.”

Meanwhile, Steve Croot of Croots Farm Shop, Duffield was given the Local Food Hero award during the presentation at the Pro-Act Stadium in Chesterfield.

Entries were judged on a number of criteria including the quality of food and drink served, customer service, use of county produce and acknowledgement of it on menus.

They are then judged by an independent panel of food specialists and each short-listed venue had a mystery shopper visit.

Councillor Joan Dixon, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Jobs, Economy and Transport, said: “Derbyshire has so many fantastic food and drink businesses that it is getting harder each year to pick a winner.

“They all play an important role in the Derbyshire’s economy and we are delighted that our awards give them all much deserved recognition.”

Other shortlisted entries included Café Nonno’s, Belper for Best International Restaurant; Fresh Ground, Belper, Café of the Year; The Greyhound Inn, Belper, Best Family Friendly Venue and The Cross Keys, Belper and Nourish at No44, Belper for the category of Best Newcomer.

The Derbyshire Food and Drink Awards were sponsored by HSKS Greenhalgh Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors and Holdsworth.
