Green-fingered Belper residents are on tenterhooks waiting to find out how the town has fared in the national Britain in Bloom contest.
In 2012, Belper was crowned the winner of the large town category in the competition, run by the Royal Horticultural Society.
Towns are only allowed to enter the national competition once every two years, so this is the first chance Belper has had to retain its crown.
Judges from the RHS were given a tour of local beauty spots last week and the Belper News spoke to Jon Wheatley during his visit to the River Gardens.
“Belper has a got a wonderful track record in this competition,” he said. “It’s a real community effort here - everybody in the town has entered into the spirit of the contest with great enthusiasm. There is also a great commitment from the council. We have seen some wonderful sights around the town.”
More than 1,000 communities around the UK enter each year. From these regional competitions, about 70 towns are selected to enter the national finals. Winners will be announced on October 16.
