Travel store survives nationwide closures

Belper’s Co-Op Travel store has escaped as 195 office closures were announced this week.

Thomas Cook, which runs the travel agency, announced the loss of 2,500 jobs nationwide on Wednesday, March 6.

However, a spokesman confirmed the company will keep its branch on King Street.

There will now be a 90-day consultation on the proposals with staff facing losing their jobs. A spokesman said: “It’s good news for Belper. We are closing down some branches in town’s where we have more than one branch in close promximity to each other.”

The Co-Op and Thomas Cooke merged together in October 2010.
