Two arrested after sniffer dog operation

Two men were arrested on suspicion of possessing drugs after a police operation in Belper town centre involving a sniffer dog.

The 24-year-old and 35-year-old have been released on bail pending further inquires following the crackdown.

During a night of checks officers took the highly trained canine into pubs and clubs in Belper, using him to sniff out illegal substances.

Thirty-five revellers were searched by officers under the Misuse of Drugs Act and as a result two men were arrested on suspicion of possession of controlled substances.

The men have been released on bail pending further inquires.

A small amount of suspected cocaine was also found discarded on King Street, Belper.

PC Roger Brown, who ran the operation, said: “The police licensing department continues to run initiatives to combat those who use and deal in drugs in our towns and cities.

“Derbyshire Constabulary and its partner agencies promote safe and enjoyable nightlife across the county but anyone caught in possession of drugs will be dealt with robustly.”

The specialist dog used during the drugs checks was loaned from South Yorkshire Police for the night on Friday, February 8.

The force has only dog training school in the country with courses on victim recovery, blood detection, clothes screening and serious sexual assault scene detection.

Named Eddie, the specially-trained English springer spaniel has worked on a number of high profile cases. Eddie has also been called in to help police forces in the Republic of Ireland and in America and, with handler Martin Grime, who is attached to the South Yorkshire police force, has been given an award for Outstanding Achievement and Dedication to Duty.

The police sniffer dog, which is trained to locate minute traces of blood, has worked with the FBI.

Anyone with information relating to drugs can call Derbyshire police on the non-emergency number 101 or to report crime anonymously call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
