Warning after spate of break-ins

Reassurances that a spate of break-ins at local shops is being tackled were offered during a public meeting in Belper.

Sgt Neil Glover said burglaries and attempted burglaries at premises across the town were being investigated by officers with a series of undercover and overt operations.

Among the recent victims are Morrisons garage, Alley Barbers and McDonald’s.

He also urged people to care while out shopping and report any suspicious incidents.

Sgt Glover said: “Shops are being targeted by somebody out to find their Christmas bonus.

“People may be targeted at their home address or while out shopping. We are running operations to help people shop around the area in safety.

“I would ask people not to hesitate to give us a ring. Many people come to us and say ‘I did stop a lad trying to break in to my car at 3am’ but have done nothing about it.”

Shops in affected areas are being offered ‘no cash left on these premises’ signs as part of the attempt to deter burglaries.
