'Well built' carnival stewards needed
BURLY stewards are being sought for a popular village carnival.
Horsley Woodhouse Carnival which takes place on July 17, usually relies on volunteers to man the gates, but organisers have become fed up with people sneaking in without paying and want to make sure it does not happen again this year.
Carnival organiser Eric Lancashsire, said stricter procedures were needed because the cost of the carnival had increased every year.
He said: "We have got a regular team who work on the entrance but some people sneak in.
"We thought maybe if we can get a few other bigger people it may take the pressure off our regulars and give them a break.
"It would be ideal and more professional, if a few well built individuals could spare a couple of hours on carnival day to help and take the entrance fee on the gate so that everyone who should pay, does so."
This year's carnival will be the 34th the village has seen.
Last year the cost of staging the event was 4,900. The income only just cover it. It is expected that the expenses for this year will be even greater.
Cllr Lancashire added: "Over the years, receipts from admission have rarely exceeded 1,000.
"Our volunteer stewards have been met with varying degrees of unpleasantness,.
Groups from the village traditionally decorate floats which parade through the village. For more information about the event and if you can helpcall Eric Lancashire on 01332 881566 or 07790 863997.
