TIME is running out to nominate your community heroes in our New Year Honours 2012.

We want you to nominate people you think deserve recognition in our New Year Honours Awards for 2012. To nominate someone get this week’s Belper News and fill in the short coupon. entry is free and you can nominate as many people as you like.

Many people across the town work tirelessly for the benefit of others and we are giving you the chance to name those you believe deserve special recognition.

We will be presenting our winners with certificates at a ceremony at the Strutts Centre, Derby Road, Belper on January 11.

There is no age limit to those you can nominate and their good deeds can be anything from helping at a local club, encouraging eco campaigns and raising funds for charity to fetching the shopping for a neighbour or caring for a sick relative.

If you know someone who has gone the extra mile for the community – let us know.

This week we received our first nomination for the Honours initiative and we are expecting lots more.

Last year we handed out Honours to eight worthy winners – Joan Winson, Tom Street, Sue McGonigal, Peter and Sarah Athwal, Mary Smedley, the Strutts Centre Volunteers, Barbara Pickering and Kitty Weston.

Sarah Athwal remembered getting the award with fondness.

She said: “We were very surprised that we were selected.

“I am sure there are many more deserving people in the area than us.

“But it is nice to think that people think so highly of us after all these years.

“I hope we can provide more good service for many more years to come.”

Belper News editor Julie Crouch said: “There are many unsung heroes out there who help make our communities tick through their vital work and good deeds.

“These people do not seek out rewards for what they do in any shape or form, and without them our lives would be the poorer.

“We had some very worthy winners last time, but we know there are many more people out there who deserve our recognition for the things they do.

“Make sure you nominate someone you know about by filling in the coupon.”

In the News each week we print articles about generous people who are raising funds for charity or doing their bit for others and the area.

So there must be plenty of people out there who are worthy of winning one of our awards.

If you want to nominate someone, please fill in the coupon below.
