A MAN who carried out roofing work in the Belper area has been sentenced for tax evasion totally £290,000.

Michael Keena, who used the alias of David Bright, carried out work fitting fascias and soffits around Derbyshire.

But he failed to declare earnings of £1.17 million between 2003 and 2010, or pay the income tax, VAT and national insurance.

Keena, who has homes in Alvaston and Wakefield, must pay £289,000 within six weeks or face prison. He has agreed to make a further payment to clear other outstanding tax liabilities. Bank accounts of £1.25million have been restrained.

Graham Ranson, of HMRC, said: “One of our priorities is to identify the abuse of our tax systems by dishonest individuals stealing vast amounts of public money for their own gain.”
