A gang of men broke a 42-year-old’s cheek during a late night attack in Belper town centre.
The group of three or four males pounced as the victim was walking along a footpath between Mill Lane and Alder Road.
After landing kicks and punches, which also caused cuts and brusing to the man’s face, the group ran off.
The assault took place some time between 1am on 2am on Saturday, June 15 as the victim was walking back to his home.
Now, Derbyshire Police are appealing for people who may have witnessed the incident or have any information about the attack to come forward.
Latest police figures - which relate to April - show there were 16 violent crimes that took place in Belper during that month.
A Derbyshire Police spokesman said: “This was a nasty unprovoked assault which has left the victim with serious injuries. It’s a very unusual incident for the area. If anyone knows who is responsible then I would urge them to get in touch with us.”
To contact police about the assault, people are being asked to phone the non-emergency 101 Derbyshire Police number.
