FORMER midwife Margaret Gilbank, who lives at a care home in Belper, has just celebrated her 109th birthday.
Margaret was born on May 18, 1902 – 15 days before patriotic song Land of Hope and Glory had its London premiere.
Staff at Osmaston Grange care home believe she is one of the oldest people in Derbyshire.
Judith Sissons, manager of the home where Margaret has lived since July, 1994, said: “She must not be far off being one of the oldest people in the world.”
Not much is known of Margaret’s life. Born in Aston, near Rotherham, she never married and has no children, although Judith said she has a niece.
She trained as a nurse in Sheffield, qualifying in August 1927, before becoming a midwife in November 1928. She worked at Derby City Hospital.
Judith said: “I know she has delivered hundreds and hundreds of babies.
“She is a very pleasant and very loving lady.”
Margaret celebrated her milestone with a party at the home and a packet of her favourite treats – Jelly Babies!
The oldest person in the world is said to be 114-year-old Maria Gomes Valentim, of Brazil.
