A Riddings woman has been recognised for the care she gives to her stepfather, son and neighbour.
Local housing provider Futures Homescape named Dorothy Moorland as Neighbour of the Year. Dorothy, 58, said: “I honestly don’t believe that I go out of my way for these people. They are my friends and family and I know they would do the same for me if it were the other way around. I must say, knowing someone nominated me for this honour nearly brought a tear to my eye.”
Dorothy cares for her step-father who is blind and unable to walk, so he can live independently. Her son, who is ill lives in the flat below and also needs her support. She also used to visit her friend, who recently passed, away to cook for her and do her washing. If anyone close by is ill she will also cook for them too.
Sarah Whattam, community development manager, said: “These awards are one of the highlights of the year. It is such a treat for us to read through the nominations and know that our tenants are such a force for good in their communities.”
Dorothy and runners up Robert and Susan Gee from Duffield, received shopping vouchers.
