A new sandwich shop which offers tasty home-made food has opened in Heanor.
The Hollywood Sandwich Bar on Ray Street represents a departure for owner Marc Scarborough, who has been in the building trade for most of his life and continues to work as a maintenance engineer.
Marc, 38, of Loscoe, said: “This is all new to me. My partner Holly has given me some tips and pointers. She is on maternity leave at the moment but will be returning to her job in a restaurant.”
Holly also provided the inspiration for the shop’s name and gave the premises a cinematic theme which is illustrated by the pictures of stars like Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and James Dean inside: “It’s a good idea to work from a theme but I also wanted to name the shop after Holly.”
Marc said: “The shop opened about six weeks ago. Trade is picking up. It was a bit quiet during the really hot weather, But this week it’s picked up quite a lot. We have all our regulars come in. The majority of the shops in Heanor come here. We have got to know quite a few people.”
The shop, which this week received a five star hygiene rating, offers breakfast cobs, cold cobs, jacket potatos with home-made fillings like bolognese or curry, paninis, home-made scotch eggs and cakes, salad boxes, crisps and pop. In the winter time Marc plans to offer warm food like Shepherd’s Pie and lasagne.
He said: “I think people love home-made food. The majority of time people prefer it to store-bought stuff. We are going to offer meal deals to draw more people in.
“The other nice thing is becoming friends with the customers. It’s a very social job. People come in every day on their lunch hour.
“We are trying to source our fruit and veg locally - from the lady on Heanor market place. Our suppliers are from Langley Mill. We do deliveries to the local shops.”
