A DOG grooming salon in Belper is clearly barking up the right tree because it is bucking the recession trend.
The Dog Shop is thriving in these tough economic times and has an average of between 55 and 60 pooch clients a week.
Owner Alison Edinboro, who has seven dogs of her own, set up the business in October 2008 and has seen its popularity rocket.
She said: “I started part-time on three days a week and then went full-time in March 2009.
“It has gone from strength-to-strength. I have been dog grooming on and off for years but as a hobby. I never thought the business would take off like it has.”
Alison, a former office manager at an engineering firm, now employs two staff, Laura Wilkinson, 21, and Laura Beastall, 18, and has more than 1,200 clients on her books.
“We are really doing well,” said Alison, 42, who moved to Belper in April 2008. “January and February are traditionally quiet, but we have been busy right through this time.”
The salon, on Belper Road, is heaven for pampered pooches. There are a variety of services, ranging from a bath or nail clipping, to a full groom including brush out, bath, specialist drying, scissor cut, nails clipped and ears cleaned.
“I think people like their dogs to look good these days,” said Alison.
