a MAJOR extension to Belper Cemetery has been completed — and now the public are being asked to give it a name.
The £236,000, 5.7-acre extension took place due to an increase in demand for spaces at the Matlock Road cemetery.
Now Amber Valley Borough Council wants someone to give it a suitable name, perhaps using inspiration from nearby landmarks and views, it said.
Cllr Jack Brown, cabinet member for Green and Thriving Places to Live, said: “I realise cemeteries are not top of the list of most people’s favourite places to visit, but the extension in Belper does provide some spectacular views across the Derwent Valley and beyond, and we want to inspire local people who are familiar with the cemetery to help us name the new part of the grounds.
“This will help families really identify with the place where their loved ones are buried in the future.
“The extension will also provide sustainable burial space for at least a further 20 years.”
The extension forms part of an overall scheme of improvements, which also include a £60,000 refurbishment of the cemetery chapel.

The council will consider any suggestions and a choice will be made by March.
