It was encouraging to hear this week that some interest had been shown in the old Haldanes supermarket shop on King Street, Belper.
We said last week that the shop was a blot on the street scene while ever it stood empty.
It is in a prime location in the town centre and needs to be used again.
The same is true of the old Focus store. It was also interesting to note that one or two other people are also keen on the idea of a bowling alley at the old Focus. It is certainly something the town lacks – the nearest ones being in Derby or Ilkeston.
It was also interesting to hear the views on the proposal for a Tesco store. We share the campaign group BATS’ hopes that any development is not a huge one that will sap the life out of the town by making trading difficult for smaller independent retailers.
There is room for so much more than a large store on this site and the other ideas, including walkways, are encouraging and worthy of investigation.
The opportunity is there to create an area that adds to Belper and not takes away from it.
